I finally found some time to apply the latest patches and sugestions
by Asger Nielsen. I've done only very basic testing on this version
(i.e. make tests) as I am quite busy, but it should be safe.
If this works ok in Windows and I get some more time to update the
documentation and finish byteswap.h (unlikely until April 7...),
this will become 1.4.
The included patch is for a fresh 1.3 distribution.
